Indiveo in action at the lung department of Frisius MC

Nurses Gerbrich de Vries and Aukje Corbée from pulmonary diseases department at Frisius MC investigated how digital education can contribute to patient preparation and well-being.
They conducted the research as part of the module "Deploying Digital Innovations in Healthcare" at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences to analyze how the digital application Indiveo provides support within a changing healthcare environment.

Patient preparation in shorter time

"We now only admit patients on the day of surgery, so we no longer have preparation time," says Aukje. Whereas nurses previously had time to personally prepare patients, today's shorter admission time requires a new approach. Using Indiveo Divis, they are exploring how digital tools help patients prepare independently and go into surgery better informed.

The power of animations

Indiveo uses animations to clearly explain complex information. The visual support helps patients better understand what to expect and contributes to thorough preparation. Aukje Corbée, who works in the pulmonary department, explains, "A patient who knows in advance that he will have to get out of bed in the afternoon after surgery can mentally prepare for this. This helps tremendously in recovery." Indiveo's intuitive design supports patients not only in understanding, but also in remembering information.

Usability and self-management

The researchers used the 5A model and Jakob Nielsen's heuristics to assess the effectiveness of Indiveo.

The 5A model provides healthcare professionals with a structured approach to supporting patient self-management. This model consists of five essential steps: Find out, Advise, Agree, Assist and Arrange. Here, the digital platform Indiveo plays an important supporting role, especially in the advice phase.

Indiveo strengthens patients' self-management by providing them with targeted information and advice on their treatment and lifestyle. The platform enables patients to calmly go through all the information at home, allowing them to start their treatment better prepared and more confidently. This digital support is a valuable complement to regular care.

10 Heuristics

The Divi "Preparing for Admission" scores well on eight of Jakob Nielsen's 10 heuristics, indicating usability and accessibility. Patients can easily navigate the Divi, and find the information clear and recognizable. As areas for improvement, the researchers cite limited language options and the lack of a search function.

Divis are now available in more than 10 languages.

Positive effects on patients and caregivers

The study shows that Indiveo contributes to a more positive care experience. Patients who view the Divi "Preparing for Admission" begin their care journey with less stress and more confidence. "Moving images and sound make the information so much more understandable for patients. They also remember it better and can revisit it at any time," Gerbrich explains. Because of Indiveo's visual design, patients ask questions more easily and in a more focused way. They also experience greater involvement in their own care process.

"People come to the examination much calmer now. We have better conversations because patients know what to expect."

Practical benefits for caregivers

Healthcare providers notice the benefits of Indiveo on a daily basis. Because patients are better informed, they have smoother conversations and respond to any questions more quickly. "People come to the examination much calmer now. We have better conversations because they know what to expect," Aukje says of the positive effect on the care process. By providing complex information via Divis in a comprehensible and clear way, this form of education works more effectively than textual leaflets.

Divis cut sleep apnea consultation time in half

Sija van der Maten, nursing consultant OSAS, also mentions the practical benefits:Via a digital video module (Divi) from Indiveo, patients receive an explanation of CPAP treatment for sleep apnea prior to their consultation. For this, the team developed an instructional video that demonstrates the specific CPAP device, so that patients already (re)know the device before they come to the consultation. That way we make it a shorter reminder call," says Sija van der Maten, nursing consultant OSAS. This approach has reduced the consultation time from 60 to 30 minutes, significantly reducing the workload.
