Deciding together on sedation in bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy is an examination that looks at the inside of the airways. Almost all patients with lung cancer have this examination to take a piece of tissue from the lungs and examine it. Usually, only a throat anesthetic is used during this examination.

Surveys of patients and specialists show that this examination is not pleasant for everyone. Experiences range from unpleasant to traumatic. Some patients receive a sedative in addition to throat anesthesia. To raise awareness about the possibilities of sedation, Lung Cancer Netherlands has developed two animation videos.

The first video shows how bronchoscopy is performed. The second video explains the different methods of sedation available during a bronchoscopy. Patients who are more comfortable receiving a sleep aid in addition to throat anesthesia are advised to discuss their preference with the doctor. By administering a sleep aid, there is a sleep time, making the examination last longer. Also, patients should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for 24 hours after the examination. By looking together at the wishes, personal situation and health status, they can decide together which drug is best for the patient.

A picture says more than a thousand words
In the Netherlands, many people have difficulty reading and writing. With patients, it is very important that they understand the information. By watching an animated video, information is better understood because you can see exactly what is happening. This takes away some of the uncertainty and fear. A part of the population does not sufficiently understand the Dutch language, which is why the videos will also be available in Turkish and Moroccan.

Working together to provide better information for patients
Lung Cancer Netherlands developed the videos together with Indiveo. Both parties are committed to providing better information to patients with lung cancer and their loved ones. The videos are customized in image and sound, so the information is better understood. Patients therefore know what is going to happen and what choices they can make.

The main tasks of Lung Cancer Netherlands are to provide information, let people share experiences and ensure quality improvement. As an advocate, the organization is committed to good lung cancer care for all. Learn more about Lung Cancer Netherlands at www.longkankernederland.nl.
