Chronic pain clearly explained

When patients struggle with pain symptoms that cannot be easily treated, patients are referred to the outpatient pain clinic. These are usually pain complaints whose cause is not immediately clear.

The pain team at hospital Tjongerschans consists of anesthesiologists, pain specialists and pain nurses and specializes in various treatments and can relieve or eliminate pain in some situations.

The challenge

Pain that has no obvious cause and lasts longer than would be expected with normal healing is also called chronic pain. Chronic pain greatly affects the quality of daily life in most patients.

The goal

It is sometimes difficult for outpatient pain medicine staff to explain the concept of chronic pain properly and understandably to patients. To make explaining it easier, they asked Indiveo to work together to create a Divi that explains chronic pain comprehensibly.

Approach and result

Indiveo works at the intersection of medical information and comprehensibility. We believe that it is not always necessary to zoom in to anatomical details to explain a subject comprehensibly. To explain chronic pain, we therefore chose a metaphor: a hypersensitive car alarm.

The result of the collaboration is a clear cartoon explaining the essence of chronic pain in two minutes. At the outpatient pain clinic, the cartoon is sent to patients as much as possible before the initial consultation. As a result, they better understand at an early stage what chronic pain entails and the consultation can be arranged more effectively.
